'SNL' Can't Resist Tiger Woods Jokes

Press, Associated. "‘SNL’ can’t resist Tiger Woods jokes." MSNBC. 06 Dec 2009. MSNBC, Web. 6 Dec 2009. .

This article talks about how Saturday Night Live (SNL) makes jokes about Tiger Woods and his "transgressions". During Saturday Night Live, they showed one skit where Tiger is interviewed where he is beat up and bruised with his wife standing next to him with a golf club. He says in the interview, "Wow, I've been really clumsy this weekend." Another one line joke that SNL said was, "Last Friday, Tiger Woods hit a tree and a bunch of ladies fell out". There were many jokes made about this professional golfer throughout the past weeks on Saturday Night Live and other media venues.
I think that this article shows how the media can target a high profile celebrity and bash on them so much to switch the views of fans and people looking in from the outside. The media can get into someone's business and broadcast it to the whole world. I think a person held at such high standards in the ranks of the country and the world ought to be more careful and aware about how the media can take their story and blow it up. They should expect it, therefore, if they don't want their stories exposed they should really plan ahead.

New Moon Extravaganza!!

Vary, Adam. "'New Moon' banks at box office." CNN.com. 22 Nov 2009. CNN, Web. 23 Nov 2009. .

This article tells us how 'New Moon' made a lot of money at the box office this weekend. It made 140.7 million dollars which is a huge increase from the first movie, which made 69.6 million opening weekend. Worldwide it made 258.8 million dollars which is a very large amount. An interesting fact is that 80 percent of those that attended 'New Moon' were women. It goes on to talk about all the other movies that made a splash behind 'New Moon'. Some of these movies are 'Blindside', '2012', and 'Planet 51'.
I think that this article shows how much money the media can pull in. I think 'New Moon' brought in so much money because it was a highly anticipated movie. It had a lot of build up, so people were very excited. The book appeals to women, and that's why I believe 80 percent of those that attended were women; not to mention dazzling Edward, and piece of steak, Jacob Black. I also think it made a lot of money because the budget for this movie was much greater than it's last budget. Therefore, adding in better special affects and action parts.

Disney's First Black Princess

Press, Associated. "Disney’s first black princess: So what, kids say." MSNBC. 13 Nov 2009. Associated Press, Web. 15 Nov 2009. .

Disney's first black princess is here! What do kids say? This article talks about kids reactions to this new princess. Their reactions are usual and normal for children, in that, they don't have one. They are just so happy that their is a new Disney princess. Parents on the other hand have a different perspective to this. Some parents are trying to get their kids to realize the significance of this new princess. They are trying to teach their girls that this is history. Although there is some controversy, in that this new princess is a frog half of the movie. Overall kids are still ecstatic for this new Disney princess.
I think this article has some very good view points on the new Disney Princess. I think it is great that their is now a brand new African American princess. Of course there will be controversy, because you can't please everyone. I also think that parents should not force their younger children to know in detail of what this means. Kids shouldn't have to worry about that kind of thing, they should just be allowed to have fun and live in the movie. I think the media did a good job in making an African Princess, the only thing that will be brought up is why the princess is a frog for a lot of the movie.

Edwards, Chuck. " Characteristics of a Successful TV Commercial." Helium. 01 Nov 2009. Helium, Web. 1 Nov 2009. .

This article talks about what makes a television commercial successful. It lists reasons and examples about what commercial producers do, to grab their viewers attention. Some of the reasons they listed are: know your intended target, define your message, tell of the product features but show the product benefits, tell a compelling story, be funny because you only get one chance, create a "Story Board", and don't skimp on production. It tells us how these steps help business's get their foot in the door. If their advertising commercials has these qualities, it will be successful. Overall, the main thing is the character of the company that keeps people coming back.
I think this article has some good points on how the media uses our strength's and weakness's to get us enveloped in their products or messages. I think the media does a good job of grabbing our attention by using the commercials they use. They play off everything we are interested in, and make us want whatever they are showing. I think they go through a great deal of time to do this, but it pays off for them in the end.

Is Text Messagaing A Viable Media and Advertising Platform?

Karp, Scott. "Is Text Messaging A Viable Media And Advertising Platform For Older Demographics? ." Publishing 2.0. 12/Jun/2007. Publishing 2.0, Web. 18 Oct 2009. .

USA Today is now in partnership with 4INFO, a text message information service. USA Today is doing this to send ads to targeted USA Today readers. Readers can also get updated information on sports, weather, stock, and other types of data. They question if older aged people will engage in text messaging and using this new tool? USA today said "We’re trying to introduce the value proposition of these types of services and how they can be … relevant for someone who’s not 17 years old." The article believes that you can't teach old users new tricks.
I think that text messaging is a great way to use advertise and use the media. Most everyone has a phone, and if not you can send text to land lines with ease. I think that people aging from 18-50 are more likely to be more responsive because they use text messaging much more than people older than 50 in their every day lives. Text messaging is an easy, accessible, and fast way to get information to a lot of people, so why not use it? Advertisers and the media should use this as much as often and as much as the are allowed to do.

How Sticky Is Membership on Facebook? Just Try Breaking Free

Aspin, Maria. "NYTIMES.com." How Sticky Is Membership on Facebook? Just Try Breaking Free - NY TIMES. 11/Mar/2008. New York Times, Web. 11 Oct 2009. .

This Article from the New York Times tells us something about Facebook that not all of us know. When you join Facebook and you want to delete your information, you cannot delete everything all the way. Facebook stores all your information in it's archives even if you deactivate your account. Facebook says the best thing to do is manually delete everything. This includes all your information, wall posts, pictures, ect. Facebook is one of the few websites that do this. Some other social networking sites that allow you to delete your profile and everything inside of it forever include; Myspace, eHarmony.com, and Friendster. They allow users to erase everything completely, why doesn't Facebook?
I think Facebook needs to fix this somehow. This sounds conspicuous and shouldn't be allowed. They should make it easy for users to erase anything. If, they want to erase all of it then they should be allowed to. People deserve this option and I don't understand why Facebook won't allow a simple way to erase a users information. When I say erase it, I mean totally wipe it out from not only the internet, but also Facebook archives.

Comcast Eyes Future in NBC Universal Bid

Press, Associated. " Comcast eyes future in bid for NBC Universal." MSNBC. 02 Oct 2009. MSNBC, Web. 4 Oct 2009. .

This article talks about how Comcast has come up with a plan, which will make them bigger than they are right now. This plan is to buy out NBC Universal. Comcast will pay $4 billion to $6 billion dollars for General Electric Co. shares, therefore, they will own 51 percent of NBC Universal. Some of the things Comcast will receive are NBC network, movie studios, several cable channels. No matter where the show is viewed Comcast will be making an increase in money somehow. This will also make their ratings go up.
I think that is too much power in one company's hands. They will own so much of what is shown on television. This will make them want more and more. They will be gaining so much money that they will, someday, be able to buy out many other companies. I think other companies will have to merge together so there will be competition against this giant.

Media Starting to Reflect Recession

Susan C. Young, . "New fall shows finally reflect the recession." MSNBC. 23/09/2009. MSNBC, Web. 27 Sep 2009. .

The media on television is starting to reflect what is happening in the real world. The event they are starting to portray is the recession. They are doing this mainly through the television. Many of these are done through tv series. Some of these are the show "Glee" which is about a struggling teacher who has to help pay for the choir program because of the economy cutting down school money supply, but he earns his added income by taking a second job as the school’s after hours janitor. Another one is "The Middle" that is about a struggling mom who has a low income, and has to provide for her family. This all due to the economy.

I think this is a very accurately portrayed article about the economy. Severely shows have become more realistic in that sense, however, i do not see the necessity of the portrayal of the recession. Whether, the recession is portrayed or not in television shows, its still occurring. Television shows should be an escape from the recession and not a reminder of it. Still an interesting article none the less.

Is 3-D Going to Take Over the Movie Industry?

Michael Avila, . "Future of 3-D animation? Anything but ‘Cloudy’." MSNBC.COM. 9/16/2009. News-A-Rama, Web. 20 Sep 2009. .

This article talks about how 3-D animation is not a fad, but something viewers like and will keep coming back to watch. This week in Los Angeles there will be a meeting held, where animation producers will talk about 3-D animation. There have been 9 3-D films that have come out, 2 of which have made over 2 million dollars just in America. The film "Up" has made the most at $291 million dollars. Wearing glasses in the movies is very "in" here and will keep being this way as they keep producing movies like this. Dreamworks has decided from now on they will make all their movies in 3-D as long as these results keep coming. They believe 3-D animation will change and keep changing the movie industry.

I think 3-D animation is changing the movie industry entirely. Pretty soon every movie that comes out will be in 3-D. This is because it has so much more to offer viewers. Who would want to go to a normal movie? When you could be going to a 3-D movie, where the movie is popping out at you, and you get a nice pair of into the future glasses to wear and take home with you. This is why i think going 3-D will change everything, and I think the longer we have it, the better technology will get. Which means the better movies will get. The 3-D switch overall, will make the movie industry prosper and grow incredibly.

"Wolff in Cheap Clothing" - - Vanity Fair's, sloppy, lazy, media columnist

"Wolff in cheap clothing." Slate. Shafer, Jack. 5 May. 2005. http://www.slate.com/id/2118042/

Jack Shafer's column was simply a brutal, critical, and cynical analysis of Vanity Fair's columnist Michael Wolff's article "No Jokes, Please, We're Liberal." Shafer describes Wolff as too busy and bored to actually consume the media he assesses. Shafer's strong response to the article was due many slurs and negative remarks Wolff made a habit of making about Slate magazine, Wolff described it as " liberal media targeted at other people in the liberal media. Or, even more finely, targeted at other people in the liberal media who are concerned about issues such as the liberal media." The whole article was a battle of words, wits, and counter attacking as a method of defense of pride. Shafer described Michael as someone who was "Gifted with a hyperactive and malicious mind, Wolff's forte is not reporting and analysis. It's the oh-aren't-I-naughty clever slur, a talent worth admiring if not applauding, especially when you're the target. Which I, and the Web site I call home, am." The article goes on to further criticise Wolff and his column's lack of credibility.

I thought this article was very interesting because I had never realised how intense the media could get between two seperate magazines. It seemed a little bit ridiculous when you really think about it. I thought the article was eye opening and interesting. However, I'm not sure I would recommend it to others because it seemed more like a personal fight between two journalists, rather than an interesting piece of media literature.

Anchor Steps Down

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32657744/ns/entertainment-television/

This article talks about how Charles Gibson will be stepping down as the anchor of "World News" on ABC. He has been there for 35 years and has told us he will still be contributing in some ways. Diane Sawyer is the one who will be taking his spot. She has been a newscaster and has been recording many documents on poverty throughout the last year. Charles said he was planning on stepping down in 2007, but as things came up he kept staying. A change is good though and Charles Gibson said so in an email "The program is now operating at a very accelerated, but steady, cruising speed and I think it is an opportune time for a transition — both for the broadcast and for me, life is dynamic; it is not static."

I think that it is a very big loss for ABC and their staff, but change has to come. I think it will give viewers a different perspective as they switch from a male to a female. Even though they are close in age at ages 66 and 63, Gibson being older, it will add something different. All people have different attributes and skills they bring to the table. Diane Sawyer is very qualified and should do a great job, filling in for Gibson. I think ABC will hire a male anchor, because now 3 out of the 4 they have are female, and i think they will have to even things up a bit. We will miss Gibson and the fine job he has done, but know Sawyer will fill in just perfectly!

Media Show Hosts

Rose, Lacey. "Oprah still TV’s best-paid talk show host." . 9/3/09. msnbc. 3 Sep 2009 .

This media article talks about how much television show hosts are being paid today. They go through a list of different hosts. Many of these host's are late night show hosts that come on after 10 p.m. Some of the names include: Jay Leno, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, O'Brien. All of these people listed make from 14 million to 45 million. Although none of these come close to Oprah Winfrey. She has been ranked as the best paid show host on our television today. Oprah makes around 568 million dollars a year. She does this through her show "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and also through radio station contracts.

I think this shows that the people we watch on television play a big part in our lives and have a great affect on what we think. I believe this to be true because why would TV channels pay these hosts so much money to have these hosts show's on their channels? That is why i believe what they are being paid is credible. These people are making shows, doing service, giving advice, etc... These are things i believe their viewers need, and it is valuable advice they give. Thousands of people every day are watching these show hosts and i think it's only fair that they get paid each of their personal amounts. Oprah gets paid the most, i think, because she is on prime time television, and has a lot to offer everyone that watches. She does a great job of covering all things along the spectrum, from cooking to personal issues. She brings in experts and hosts them on her show and does a great job of getting what she wants across to her viewers. All of these reasons are why i believe she tops the list.

Microsoft Zune HD takes on Ipod

Microsoft came out with its new Zune HD, which will be hitting stores September 15. They are hoping that the new design, style and price of the new Zune HD will outdo their competitor and top seller the Apple iPod. The new Zune HD is smaller, has a touch screen, comes in 5 different colors, and is cheaper then the Apple iPods. I think that even with the new Zune HD the Apple iPods will always be on top. Most people love their iPods and aren't about to switch when they are comfortable with what they already have.
